SLLS regularly partners with other nonprofit legal organizations and social service agencies to increase access to justice for vulnerable people. Through these partnerships, we provide pro bono activities to attorneys throughout our service area. Additionally, we connect our clients to organizations who can help with their non-legal needs. We also ensure that our most vulnerable clients can meet with our attorneys in settings where they feel safe and can easily access our help. These partnerships include:
The Baton Rouge Bar Association supports SLLS' mission by recruiting pro bono attorneys to represent clients we refer. BRBA also conducts community based legal clinics in the greater Baton Rouge area.
SLLS runs a Medical-Legal Partnership with Daughters of Charity Health Centers in New Orleans, providing legal services at any of their 10 neighborhood locations. SLLS increases beneficial health outcomes for our clients by providing civil-legal services to patients who are either referred by their doctor or see us in the clinic and walk-in to ask for legal help.
SLLS runs a legal clinic for students at the Delgado Community College Single Stop office. Our work breaks down barriers to their education and career advancement. For example, we help students who are working toward licensure with matters, such as expungements and credit matters, to remove legal obstacles preventing them from achieving their employment goals.
JAC tackles deficiencies in the post-conviction phase of the criminal justice system while creating a supportive collaborative space for attorneys and advocates. SLLS collaborates with JAC on Clean Jacket Day expungement events and other projects.
Louisiana Appleseed collaborates with organizations like SLLS to identify systemic problems, formulate solutions, and engage pro bono counsel to affect change.
Through its Access to Justice Program, the LSBA supports many projects designed to help legal aid programs in Louisiana like, SLLS. Examples include projects involving technology, training of staff and clients, and bringing together many members of the legal profession to improve access to justice for low-income people.
The Martinet Society of Greater Baton Rouge recruits pro bono attorneys to assist SLLS clients, free of charge, in the Baton Rouge area.
We collaborate with FJC to support a pilot incubator project in which attorneys provide up to 30 hours per month of pro bono assistance in domestic violence and family law cases in the greater New Orleans area. Two SLLS staff attorneys are housed at the FJC to help families escaping domestic violence receive easily-accessible legal services.
The Pro Bono Project is a nonprofit organization that works in four of the parishes we serve. They recruit volunteer attorneys and assign cases to them based on their interests and location. Services are provided free of charge.
We are involved in many collaborations with other agencies, nonprofits and local governments on projects critical to our mutual missions. If your project or grant proposal needs a legal aid component, call our office in New Orleans or email the SLLS Executive Director.
