You may be eligible for our free legal services and can apply by calling our Covid Legal Hotline at\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/slls.org\/covid-19\/\">1-844-244-7871<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0or applying online<strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastate.kempscaseworks.com\/\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h2>Pyramid and Ponzi Schemes versus Multilevel Marketing (MLMs)<\/h2>\n<p>MLMs and Ponzi\/pyramid schemes often seem similar, however there are minor differences that distinguish them.<\/p>\n<h3>What is a Pyramid Scheme?<\/h3>\n<p>Pyramid schemes usually promise large profits primarily mainly from recruiting others to join the \u201cprogram\u201d.\u00a0 Profits are not based on any real investment or sale of goods. \u00a0Recruits are often encouraged to buy more products to sell than they could ever sell.\u00a0 They may be few actual sales.<\/p>\n<p>A Ponzi scheme is very similar to a pyramid scheme, however in a Ponzi scheme there is no product. Ponzi schemes are often called \u201cPeter-Paul\u201d scams because there is no real investment opportunity.\u00a0 The promoter uses money from new recruits to pay the benefits promised to earlier recruits. \u00a0Promoters in Ponzi schemes will often use high-pressure sales tactics to get you to join. They may emphasize that you will lose the opportunity if you don\u2019t act quickly.<\/p>\n<h3>What is MLM?<\/h3>\n<p>In Multi Level Marketing (MLM), companies sell their products or services through person-to-person sales. Sellers also bring in new sellers.\u00a0 When a new seller sells something, those higher up the chain gets a cut.<\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s the difference?<\/h3>\n<p>A MLM will not require you to recruit others to be paid.<\/p>\n<h3>How can I figure out if a company is a Ponzi scheme?<\/h3>\n<p>Researching the company, researching what others are saying, considering the products the company offers, understanding the costs of joining, asking about refunds, and reading the paperwork can all help avoid schemes.<\/p>\n<h3>If I was victim to a Pyramid or Ponzi Scheme, what should I do?<\/h3>\n<p>If you have information of a possible Ponzi or pyramid scheme, or if you have fallen victim to either of the schemes, you can file a tip to the SEC <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #138a43;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #138a43; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/acadia.sec.gov\/TcrExternalWeb\/faces\/pages\/intake.jspx\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. You can also leave a tip by phone with the FBI at 1-800-225-5324.<\/p>\n<p>The IRS offers some <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #138a43;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #138a43; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/help-for-victims-of-ponzi-investment-schemes\">relief<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to victims of these schemes through special tax rules.
