What is a Tenant Screening Report?<\/h2>\n

Landlords sometimes use tenant screening reports to check if applicants have:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Been evicted before.<\/li>\n
  • Owe money to a previous landlord for rent or damages.<\/li>\n
  • Have a criminal history.<\/li>\n
  • Have a credit score below a certain number.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    What if I’m denied housing because of the report?<\/h2>\n

    If you\u2019re denied housing because of a tenant screening report, ask the landlord why you were denied and the name of the company that made the report.<\/p>\n

    The law requires the landlord to:<\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Tell you if the tenant screening or credit report was used to deny you housing.<\/li>\n
    • Give you the contact information for the company that made the report.<\/li>\n
    • Let you know that you have the right to challenge the information in the report.<\/li>\n
    • Let you know that you can get a free copy of the report if you ask for it within 60 days of being denied housing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
