The staff attorney will work within SLLS’s Veterans & Innovative Projects Unit (VIPU) and provide legal representation, advocacy, and community legal education to veterans and low income and unhoused individuals in the Greater New Orleans area. The attorney will help operate SLLS’s medical-legal partnership (MLP) at the New Orleans VA, attend other outreach events as needed, and work closely with partners, including SLLS’s Supportive Services for Veterans and Family (SSVF) partners. The attorney will handle a varied caseload including Social Security (disability claims and appeals, retirement, overpayments, cessations, reductions, terminations, and other benefit access issues); Medicaid, SNAP, and other public benefits; wills and powers of attorney. The attorney will also represent eligible clients in obtaining Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) waivers, expungements, and legal matters related to the reentry needs of clients participating in the United Way’s RETURN Initiative.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Licensed to practice law in Louisiana and in good standing with the Louisiana Bar. SLLS may consider applicants awaiting results from the July bar exam. This position will be full-time with a salary range of $54,563 – $90,563, depending on experience. Additional compensation for bilingualism.
