Southeast Louisiana Legal Services (SLLS) offers free legal advice and representation in civil matters to low-income individuals in southeast Louisiana. We do not handle criminal or personal injury cases. We have an application process to determine eligibility for all applicants before providing legal representation.
Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
We help survivors of sexual and domestic violence get protective orders, divorces, and child custody along with related issues.
Families
We help with family relationships, like divorce and child custody along with related matters. We also help with emancipation in limited circumstances to access school, medical care, housing or other benefits.
Renters
We help tenants facing issues like evictions, disputes with their landlords, voucher terminations, tenant rights, and security deposit refunds.
Homeowners
We help homeowners protect their home from threats like foreclosure, tax sales, predatory lending and code enforcement or code violations.
Consumer Protection, Collection Defense and Bankruptcy
We help people resolve debt collection harassment, bankruptcy, garnishments, bad car deals, fraud and misrepresentation, unfair trade practices, tax-related issues, contractor-disputes, and enforcement of consumer rights.
Taxpayers
We provide legal aid for individuals dealing with federal (IRS) tax issues.
Government Benefits for Income, Food, and Health Insurance
We help people keep government benefits: Disability Income terminations (SSI/SSDI) – Social Security cutoffs and Overpayments, Food Stamps (SNAP), Medicaid/Medicare, Welfare (FITAP & TANF), keeping other cash assistance programs.
Veterans
We help veterans with a variety of civil legal issues, in addition to specific legal needs veterans have like discharge upgrades, obtaining VA benefits and VA overpayments.
Unhoused People
We help people experiencing homelessness or facing housing instability with issues like getting social security benefits, healthcare and obtaining identification (State ID’s, Birth Certificates, Driver Licenses).
Wills and Successions
We help people protect their families and assets by creating wills, powers of attorney and handling uncontested successions.
Disaster Survivors
We help disaster survivors resolve legal issues that are barriers to recovery. This includes FEMA appeals, Restore Louisiana problems, disaster food stamps, rental assistance and other income, successions, contractor disputes and disaster aid collections.
Workers, Employees, Professionals and Employment
We help workers get unemployment benefits, resolve wage claims, restore driver licenses, and protect professional licenses (Nursing, CNA, CDL). We help civil service workers with terminations and suspensions. We also help with criminal records expungements.
Education Access for Students and Parents
We help families with admission denials and expulsions from public schools.
