How we may help
SLLS helps with tax problems in two ways. First, through a joint project with the National Technology Assistance Project and the Legal Aid Society of Orange County, taxpayers can file their income tax forms claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit. An easy-to-use computer program helps you generate the tax forms at our office. Taxpayers can then file their return electronically from the office. This service is provided free of charge.
Thanks to a grant from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), SLLS also helps Louisiana low-income taxpayers with conflicts with the IRS, including these typical problems:
- Audits, collections, tax court litigation, and other disputes with the IRS in which the amount claimed by the IRS is less than $50,000 for a tax year.
- State or local tax controversies if we represent the taxpayer against the IRS.
- Non-filers who have not been contacted by the IRS.
How to get help
All of our program offices can handle your application for help. However, cases that are accepted are handled by our downtown New Orleans office. If you have an emergency, we will see you as soon as we can. We ask that you call first if possible, to make an appointment. Click here to find the office nearest you. When you come in, bring with you all papers you have about your problem, including all letters from or to the IRS, copies of your tax returns (if any) for the years in question, and any other papers that may help us understand your problem. If you live outside of our service area, contact the free legal services program nearest you to apply for help. Click here to link to a free legal services directory on another website.
If you can't come in
If you are disabled or you can't tavel to one of our program offices, call to arrange a telephone interview. Call our New Orleans office at 504-529-1000 or if long distance, call toll free at 877-521-6242.
Emergencies
You can lose important rights by waiting too long. If you have an emergency (such as a filing or appeal deadline or court date), call us and explain. We will make every effort to see you as soon as possible. If you can't reach us by phone, come to the office with your papers to explain the emergency to us. |
