How we may help
Our advocates can:
- Help you get minimum wage, overtime pay, and money not paid after losing a job.
- Help you get unemployment compensation after being fired or after having to quit when your employer changes the terms or conditions of your job.
- Represent you in administrative appeals and litigation to get licenses needed to work.
- Answer questions and refer you to help with workplace retaliation or discrimination.
- Help workers and their families get government benefits needed to stay working after leaving welfare, or to survive during a job search.
- Give talks to community groups and social services agencies about employment law issues.
How to get help
If you have an emergency, we will see you as soon as we can. We ask that you call first if your problem is not an emergency. When you come in, bring any and all papers you have about your problem.
If you can't come in
If you are disabled or you cannot travel to one of our offices, call us to arrange a telephone intake interview.
Emergencies
You can lose important rights by waiting too long to get help. If you have an emergency (such as an appeal deadline or a hearing), call our nearest office and explain. If your local office is not taking intake at that time, call our downtown office and speak with the Employment and Benefits Unit secretary at (504) 529-1000, ext. 242. Explain your problem and it will be discussed with the unit manager, to see if the downtown office unit can help. |
