How Attorneys Can Help
Our program serves New Orleans and other parishes that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Law firms and attorneys who want to provide pro bono help with disaster relief should call our Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow Amanda Furst at amfurst@nolac.org or (504) 529-1000, ext. 240. Firms or attorneys who want to make financial donations should contact Director of Legal Services Mark Moreau at mamoreau@nolac.org or (504) 529-1000, ext. 237 or use our on-line donation system on our home page.
The demand on us for services is overwhelming compared to our limited resources. We meet only about 10% of the need poor people have for civil legal representation in our area. This is typical of Legal Services programs. So we need your help! Here are some other ways you can help:
Join our local Pro Bono Project, (504) 581-4043, and accept pro bono cases. We are a major supporter of the Project and refer many clients to them. Volunteer attorneys are particularly needed for cases on the northshore.
Contract with us to handle cases for a reduced fee, paid for by SLLS. Call us for an application or for information: Southshore: (504) 529-1000, ext. 225; Northshore: (985) 345-2130.
If you are a pro bono attorney, join the Civil Law Practice Area of www.probono.net/la and contribute helpful pleadings on poverty law issues.
Let us know about important legal issues affecting the poor that come to your attention.
Co-counsel with our attorneys on a pro bono basis.
Train or mentor our attorneys.
If you are a retired attorney or judge, consider volunteering at our office. (Our insurance will cover your pro bono work).
If you handle class actions or do estate planning, you have unique opportunities to help us. Consider us as a beneficiary of any class action residual funds. Recommend us to clients who ask for your advice on charities to name in their wills or estate plans.
Support our fundraising efforts and help us with a financial contribution. Your donations are tax deductible
Volunteer to write or edit client legal education material for posting on www.lawhelp.org/LA, a legal information website for the low-income. |

How Law Students Can Help
|
| |
| Volunteer to work at our offices or one of our clinics. Currently, we have family, consumer and eviction clinics. You may also clerk for individual attorneys. Our domestic violence project, www.lawhelp.org/LA website project, and employment/benefits law unit, always need law student volunteers.
Do a third year law student practitioner externship through our office.
Apply for law school foundation sponsored summer clerkships with our office.
If you are involved with a law school clinic or other public interest work for the low-income, join the Civil Law Practice Area of www.probono.net/la.
To volunteer, contact Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow Amanda Furst at (504) 529-1000, ext. 240, or amfurst@nolac.org. |

How Courts Can Help
|
| |
- Increase access to justice for the low-income without representation, by including referral information for local free legal services programs, and by listing the website of Louisiana's online guide to free legal help, www.lawhelp.org/LA, on court forms.
- Cooperate with us in creating simple forms and pleadings for pro se use, through court websites and through the document assembly feature to be implemented in 2005 on www.lawhelp.org/LA.
