Staff Attorney Opening:

Southeast Louisiana Legal Services seeks a full-time staff attorney for its Family Violence Project in New Orleans. The application deadline is July 30, 2010.

Responsibilities

Staff attorneys handle a significant poverty law case load, which includes substantial client contact, negotiation, advocacy and litigation. The current full-time attorney position involves a family violence practice.

Qualifications

Admission to the Louisiana bar for attorney position required. Commitment to legal services to the poor.

Salary

$37,000 to $46,000 for new full-time staff attorney depending on experience. Loan forgiveness may be available through your law school and/or Louisiana Bar Foundation. Excellent benefits: employer paid health insurance, pension, short-term and long-term disability insurance and life insurance for full-time attorney position. Flexible working hours and liberal vacation leave.

Receptionist/Switchboard Operator--New Orleans Office
 

Our New Orleans office needs a receptionist/switchboard operator to handle multi-line telephone system for busy 30 lawyer legal aid office and to greet clients and visitors.

Skills required: Ability to handle high volume of calls and walk-in customers. Ability to relate well with low income public and explain basic office information. Must have basic word processing and data entry skills. Spanish language fluency is a plus for job,but not a requirement. Resume should describe relevant work experience for this position.

Salary and benefits:  $21,000 to $26,600 depending on experience, language fluencies and education. Good health, life, disability insurance, vacation benefits.

AmeriCorps VISTA Member-Oil Spill Outreach Project

 

AmeriCorps VISTA member positions for our Oil Spill Disaster Outreach Project. The VISTA members will help SLLS develop outreach projects in communities directly impacted by the oil spill. Duties will also include coordination of outreach, liaison with other social service agencies, development of community legal education and resource materials, help with recruitment of volunteers and intake related support to SLLS attorneys.

SLLS is a civil legal aid program for low income people. Check the national AmeriCorps webpage for more information on the VISTA program. Check www.slls.org for information on SLLS. These VISTA positions are expected to be for a one-year term.

College education preferred for our VISTA members.

Compensation: $891 per month living stipend, $5350 education stipend (if year completed per federal rules)
